For the first time in decades, the Suffolk County Legislature will hold its committee meetings in Riverhead next week in the run-up to a Riverhead general meeting.

East End legislators Al Krupski and Bridget Fleming negotiated an agreement with the rest of the legislature to hold committee meetings for two legislative meeting cycles at the Evans K. Griffing County Center in Riverside.

Local officials are upset with a county bill, passed today by the legislature, that they say will usurp the town's zoning and land use powers — a charge county officials deny.

“It’s the first indoor swimming pool for the North and South Fork that is of this size and open to the public,” said Legislator Jay Schneiderman. “It’s going to be an amazing facility.”

The county legislature won’t budge. All legislative committee meetings will be held in Hauppauge this year, despite Legislator Al Krupski’s efforts to have some of them convened in Riverhead.

North Fork Legislator Al Krupski is opposed to a bill sponsored by his South Fork colleague Jay Schneiderman, which would fund a $79,000 study of the impacts of the Millstone nuclear power plant on the temperatures of the L.I. Sound.
