A fire Wednesday morning destroyed a home on Lincoln Street in Polish Town.

One of the owners of the home, Ray Smith, discovered the fire just past 9 a.m. and called 911, according to Riverhead Fire Chief Gio Woodson. The fire seems to have started in the attic or on the second floor of the dwelling, he said. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

More than 250 firefighters from seven area fire departments (including Riverhead, Flanders, Jamesport, Mattituck, Cutchogue and Mattituck) responded to the call. Three Riverhead firefighters were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, Woodson said.

“All units were dismissed and the scene turned over to the Riverhead Town Fire Marshall’s Office at 1:53pm,” according to the Riverhead Fire Department website.
