The 17-year-old boy accused of firing several rounds from a shotgun on Raynor Avenue last night was held in lieu of $250,000 cash bail following his arraignment in Riverhead Justice Court this morning.
Riverhead Town Justice Richard Ehlers signed an order of protection requiring Nathan Streit to stay away from the woman injured in the shotgun blast, as well as her son and a third person involved in an altercation with Streit prior to the shooting.
Streit got into a verbal and physical altercation with Jon Gallo, 26 and Shane Sypher, 25, both of Riverhead after 8 p.m. last night, according to prosecutors. He left the location where the conflict occurred and returned with a pistol-grip shotgun, police said. He fired several rounds at Gallo and Sypher, missing them but striking Gallo’s mother, Sharon with two pellets. She was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for treatment of injuries police said were not life-threatening.
Streit fled from the scene and was tracked down at a house on Osborn Avenue by a Riverhead Police K9 unit, according to a Riverhead Police news release. Town police, assisted by state troopers, searched the house and apprehended the suspect, according to the release.
Streit, charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and reckless endangerment in the second degree, both class A misdemeanors, appeared in court dressed in a white paper jumpsuit and stocking feet.
Police said this morning Streit was undomiciled. When asked by a Legal Aid attorney representing him during the arraignment where he lived, he replied, “I don’t live nowhere.”
In asking the court to imposes “substantial bail” the prosecutor noted Streit’s homelessness as well as two outstanding arrest warrants. One was issued in upstate Amsterdam City in connection with failing to appear on a first-degree robbery charge and another issued by N.Y. State Family Court, according to the prosecutor.
Ehlers set bail at $250,000 cash and $500,000 bond and directed the defendant be brought back to court tomorrow.
