Riverhead Town Police are searching for a man who discharged a handgun and then fled police on foot last night in Calverton.
Police said an officer on routine patrol came upon a group of about 20 people in the roadway at the intersection of Kay Road and Calverton Court last night at about 8:10 p.m. It appeared to the officer that the group was about to engage in a fight when one man pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the group and then fired into the roadway, according to a press release issued by Riverhead police this afternoon.
The officer activated his overhead lights, which caused the group to begin to disperse, according to the report. The officer chased the man with gun behind a residence on Kay Road, but lost sight of the man.
Additional officers, including a K9 unit, responded to the scene to search for the armed man. The search yielded no results.
The incident is under investigation, police said. They ask anyone with information is asked to call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
