Riverhead Blue Waves lost their first home game of the season today to the Smithtown East Bulls, 35-19.
Riverhead went scoreless during the first half of the game, and entered the third quarter trailing 14-0. Four minutes into the third quarter, quarterback Christian Pace connected with Isaiah Barbieri in the end zone to put Riverhead on the board, but Smithtown East soon pulled ahead again, 21-7.
After the Bulls scored again, Albert Daniels ran in the second touchdown for the Blue Waves in the final seconds of the third quarter (followed by a failed two-point conversion) making it 27-13. Smithtown East answered with another touchdown and successful two-point conversion of their own, and it looked like the game was finished at 35-13.
But the Waves weren’t done – Daniels intercepted a pass with two minutes left in play, and with only 1.6 seconds on the clock, Pace threw to Anthony Marcello for Riverhead’s final touchdown, ending the game at 35-19.
Riverhead (1-2) will have its homecoming game next week against Deer Park (0-3) at 1:30 p.m.
