Letter: I never heard about this train wreck so the article was very interesting to me. I agree — there should be some sort of memorial at the site.

Railroad crossing work will shut down Edgar Avenue in Aquebogue Thursday and a portion of River Road in Calverton Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

The Railroad Museum of Long Island wants to mark the Calverton site where a 1926 express train wreck killed six and destroyed the Golden Pickle Works in Calverton.

The MTA will be working on the LIRR grade crossing on Kroemer Avenue in Riverhead starting around 7:30 p.m. this evening. Work is expected to continue through 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Riverhead Police said.

The MTA is working on the LIRR grade crossing at Roanoke Avenue. Work is expected to continue through 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

Three Riverhead roads will be closed at different times this week due to ongoing maintenance for the Long Island Rail Road, Riverhead Police said in a press release on Monday. 

Riverhead Police on March 5 arrested 10 people on criminal trespass charges for allegedly trespassing on the LIRR tracks, in a joint effort with MTA Police to reduce train vs. pedestrian accidents.

River Road in Calverton, between Edwards Avenue and Route 25, will be closed to through-traffic from 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 until 8 a.m. on Sunday, March 2 for a railroad grade crossing upgrade by the MTA, Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said.

LIRR will continue grade crossing rehabilitation work this week in Riverhead: Osborn Avenue April 9 and 11; Ostrander Avenue April 13. Expect road closures and detours.

After years of complaints and requests from Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski, the LIRR's grade crossing rehabilitation program has turned its attention to Riverhead.
