Riverhead Central School District’s proposed budget for the upcoming school year will be the subject of a presentation to the community on Thursday evening.
The presentation by School Superintendent Dr. Aurelia Henriquez and Deputy Superintendent Sam Schneider will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Room 133 at Riverhead High School.
A translator and translation devices will be available for Spanish speakers, the district said.
The Board of Education on April 18 adopted a proposed $140,380,950 operating budget for the 2018-2019 school year. The budget represents a 2.93 percent spending increase over the current school year. The tax levy required to fund the budget is within the district’s 0.91-percent tax levy limitation for the coming school year.
The budget will add a bilingual guidance counselor at the high school, a bilingual reading teacher at Pulaski, a Spanish teacher at the middle school, an ENL teacher at Riley and door monitors at Phillips and Riley.
It also includes funding for a school resource officer to be provided by the Riverhead Town Police Department, which will share in the cost of the resource officer in the district.

The districtwide budget vote is set for Tuesday, May 15. Also on that date, district voters will fill three seats on the board of education and decide on two additional propositions. Seven candidates are running for the trustee spots this year. See prior story.
Proposition II authorizes the expenditure of $154,500 from the cafeteria fund (also known as the food service fund) for improvements to the cafeterias at Phillips, Aquebogue and Riley Avenue elementary schools.
Proposition III authorizes the establishment of a cafeteria capital reserve fund for the purpose of funding future capital improvements to the district’s school cafeterias. The cafeteria capital reserve fund shall not exceed $4 million for a probable term of 20 years. The monies for the cafeteria capital reserve fund will come out of surplus funds, if any, in the cafeteria fund, of not more than $400,000 per fiscal year.
Additional budget and voting information is available on the district’s website.
