Dear Editor:

As a concerned citizen, I attended the 2026 Inauguration of Riverhead Town Government officials via a virtual connection.

I was duly impressed with the swearing-in ceremony.

I do have a quibble and that is this: Why is each elected official only swearing to uphold only the Constitution?

Why do we not include a pledge of allegiance and commitment to the principles in the Declaration of Independence as well?

Most importantly, why do we not include that we will strive for a more perfect union in our work as public servants, uphold the principles of equality for all and defend our inalienable rights?

To me the Declaration of Independence is the most important founding document of our great republic, for the it sets out a goal for us as a people that we have not yet achieved in our grand experiment in self-government in the first 250 years. We have fallen short and, sadly, it would appear we are losing ground daily under the current regime.

We need to include a pledge to uphold the ideals of equality and justice for all from the Declaration and keep it top of mind in our elected officials. It would act as a reminder that we as a people have made a commitment to the principles in the Declaration of Independence.

We have a lot of work ahead of us to realize a more just, equitable and happier society for all of us.

It starts with each of us doing our part and participating. Instead of complaining or wringing our hands, let us get out there, volunteer somewhere and help move this experiment in self-government forward.
