Riverheadl’s fall sports teams and athletes were honored for their exceptional academic performance, as recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

The Riverhead Athletic Club, a newly-formed booster club to support Riverhead Central School District’s sports teams, is holding its inaugural fundraiser on Friday.

The Riverhead Board of Education voted unanimously tonight to fund spring interscholastic sports, music and high school clubs. The cost of the reinstated programs will be paid out of the 2020-2021 budget line for health insurance expenses, after health insurance costs proved to be lower than the amount budgeted.

Now that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said some fall sports may resume competitive play as of Sept. 21, at least three members of the Riverhead school board want to revisit the question of restoring funding for athletics, music, theater and extracurricular activities.

Riverhead came out strong but could not get the better of West Islip yesterday, losing 12-8.

In a 'signature win on hostile territory,' Riverhead notched a big upset over rival Bellport Saturday, handing the Clippers their first loss of 2014 in the season finale. 9-7.
