The Blue Waves came out strong on their home turf yesterday against West Islip — within the first minute they made it 1-0.
Things were off to a good start, but West Islip was not a willing participant. They roared back and scored three straight goals to make it 3-1. Riverhead came back with a quick strike to make it 3-2, but the field would tilt West Islip’s way as they put in another two goals to take a 5-2 lead. By the end of the first half, West Islip was up 7-2 over Riverhead.
The second half was no easier for the Waves, as West Islip converted on some quick passing, and made it 9-3. Riverhead struck back with a quick goal to make it 9-4, and with time running out in the third quarter, a Riverhead shot found its way to the back of the West Islip net, but the referee ruled it went in after the horn.
Riverhead managed to claw its way back in the fourth, despite two more West Islip goals. The Blue Waves kept it close but couldn’t catch up and West Islip grabbed the win, 12-8.
Riverhead (1-2-0, 2-2-0) has a four-game road trip up next and won’t return to the home field until Monday, April 17 when they take on Sachem North. (Game time: 4 p.m.)
